How do heat sinks work?

Heat sinks are thermal conductors that help the heat from the component dissipate through the large surface area of the heat sink’s fins. The air gap between the component and the heat sink should be removed with a thermal Void or Gap Filler. If no Thermal Interface Material is used the heat sink will be compromised as air is a very poor conductor of heat.
